VideoFuel: NBC Sports Network to Shut Down, Documentary + Launches And More

By Rachel DeSimone on January 29, 2021

This Week in the Digital Video Industry

1 NBC Sports Network Will Shut Down to Bolster Peacock Streaming Service

The move will shutter a reliable stream of revenue for the company — NBCSN brings in hundreds of millions of dollars annually — in order to help build Peacock into a bona fide competitor to other streaming services, like Netflix and Disney+, and to shore up the USA Network.

2 Pandemic Helping Drive Consumer Adoption of vMVPDs

From its “Growth and Challenges for vMVPDs” report, Parks Associate has found that 43% of U.S. broadband homes that have traditional pay-TV are likely to switch to a vMVPD service within 12 months.

3 YouTube is Testing Clips on Live Streams and VODs

YouTube is introducing clipping — the ability to make short clips of live streams or videos — starting today with a small group of creators. Those clips can be anywhere between five and 60 seconds in length and will have a new URL associated with them.

4 New Streaming Platform Documentary+ Launches

A new international non-fiction streaming platform is positioning itself as the “preeminent home for feature-length and short documentary films”.

5 NBCU's Peacock Pins WWE Network Exclusive U.S. Streaming Rights

The over-the-top wrestling entertainment service’s existing U.S. subscribers (about 1.1 million in total) will be migrated over to Peacock Premium, where they’ll continue to get access to WWE Network but will pay 50% less per month while getting full access to the version of the Peacock Premium tier with ads.

6 How Kids Television Became the Most Heated Front in the Streaming Wars

As more consumers move to streaming-video services, however, kids properties are taking on new importance — and many major entertainment outlets, both traditional and upstart, are gearing for battle.
