At Zype we work hard every day to connect the world’s streaming video and viewers—for us the future is now, as is the future of work. We have had Zypesters globally distributed since the early days, and have always been a “remote first” workplace. Prior to the pandemic—which saw many companies struggling to help their teams thrive in a remote work environment—Zype teams communicated and collaborated across time zones with ease because we already had the support system in place needed to excel in a remote working environment. The strength of our remote culture enabled Zype to grow through the acquisition of MAZ Systems in August of 2021, which is how I came to join Zype.
Today, Zypesters are for the most part located across four continents—North and South America, Europe, and Asia—and each one of us plays an essential part in maintaining and building upon our team culture.
Recently we were recognized for the second year in a row by Quartz Media as a Best Company for Remote Workers. Within our category as a mid-sized company, we were the only online media company that earned a spot on the ranks. We are very proud of this accomplishment, and thankful to our team for working hard every day to make Zype a great place to work, no matter where they are located throughout the world!
In the past two years our team grew exponentially and this recognition reinforces the confidence that it can be done successfully with the proper tools, procedures and buy-in from key stakeholders.
Workplace flexibility has allowed Zype to foster a culture that focuses on collaboration and empowering teams. From the recruiting stage through onboarding we are focused on generating a fabulous experience that showcases our culture and promotes meaningful cross-functional interactions that build strong relationships between coworkers and peers.
An example of how we do this is through our weekly all-hands Monday meetings. Each meeting is hosted by a different team member who takes a few minutes to share a bit about themself before leading the team through the 30-minute agenda. It’s a quick paced meeting which includes the ritual of re-stating our annual priorities (one of which is “Strive to Be Awesome in Everything We Do”), highlighting celebrations, welcoming new hires, and giving a nod to the team members who gave and received the most peer recognitions, in addition to each department sharing a win and challenge they’re facing.
Additionally, our fun, and very busy, Slack channels allow us to get to know each other better via virtual watercooler chats. We also promote wellness and work/life balance with a wellness reimbursement program, Summer Fridays and virtual learning programs that even include non-work related subjects. And we provide access to productivity tools that help improve working collaboratively–both synchronously and asynchronously.
We work hard every day to be sure each Zypester has everything they need to do their job in a comfortable and safe environment, and to do it in a meaningful way for them.
