These days, a whopping 84% of adults are using mobile devices. For content and media companies, being on mobile is an absolute necessity.  One of the best ways to do this is by creating a mobile app.

A mobile app will draw in new customers, build a stronger base of returning users, and create more opportunity to draw higher revenue. It is important to be available to consumers on as many platforms as possible. Mobile devices are being used more than ever before, so be sure to make your content available on them. Plus, maintaining a well-designed app will give your users yet another opportunity to give your content a 5 star rating… how can you pass that up? Once you’ve decided to create an app for your business or personal endeavors, you should follow these seven steps to maximize its potential.

_______________

1. Keep it simple

Less is more when it comes to taking up screen space. If too much is going on on the screen at once, users can become confused or overwhelmed. Every pixel should be used wisely, but this does not necessarily mean that every pixel should be filled in terms of use. It’s OK, and oftentimes beneficial to not have too many buttons or places to click on one screen.

2. Brand UI

Use colors that align with the industry’s theme as well as with your business’ website. You should attract the user’s attention in the right places, for example with bright buttons against a simple background color. Make the app feel as much like your brand as possible.

3. Intro for first-time users

When a user opens the app for the first time, consider including an interactive introduction to the different functionalities of the app- this is especially important for complex apps that have many different features and uses. If you want your users to reap the maximum benefit and enjoyment of the app, then inform them of the various possibilities from the get-go. Linkedin, Instagram, and Foursquare are 3 examples of mobile apps that provide excellent onboarding experiences for their users. These intros are interactive, welcoming, and make it clear that the app is meant for the customer rather than the company.

4. Personal experience.

UX is extremely important in the use of a mobile app. The user experience is very important because a good one is in large part the reason why many return to the app. Ensure a good onboarding experience, easy navigation, and a system that makes the entire session feel personal to each user. Consider recommendations if you’re a content-based app, or perhaps a way to bookmark and like different things and share with friends.

5. Software updates

In order to keep an existing user base engaged, it’s important to keep them in the loop about new updates and improvements. Give users a reason and incentive to return to your app, and prove that you are always working to make it a better experience for them.

6. Physical comfort

A lot of people operate their mobile devices using one hand, and often even just one finger. Users are much more likely to stay on your app if important buttons are within reach for quick and easy use.

7. Ensure user and data security

Trust is an important feature of running a business. Users should be able to trust that their information is safe and protected, and that their location services or other details are not being infringed upon. You can begin to ensure data security by implementing a good API strategy: this starts with well built identification, authentication, and authorization measures. To avoid encountering any major issues, take data security seriously and consider taking these things into account.
